YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE PAST
Easter 1974. A family vanishes from their home on an idyllic island off the Swedish coast. They have left everything behind – including their one-year-old daughter, Ebba.
Now, years later, Ebba has returned to the island. She and her husband have suffered the loss of their only child and are looking to make a fresh start. But within days, their house is the target of an arson attack.
YOU CANNOT ESCAPE THE FUTURE
Detective Patrik Hedstrom takes on the investigation, aided by his wife, crime writer Erica Falck, who has always been fascinated by the mystery of Ebba’s abandonment and the family’s tragic history.
When dried blood is found under the floorboards of the old house, it seems that the cold case involving the missing family is about to be brought back to life. And soon, Patrik and Erica are consumed by the hunt for a killer who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried…
Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog. Today I chose to talk about Camilla Lackberg’s eight book in Fjallbacka Series.
As usual, the book alternates between a story which takes place in 1974 and a story which takes place in the present. During Easter in 1974, a family vanished from the island of Valo. The police are called by a boy who lives there in a summer camp. When the police arrive, they will find that everybody seems to be gone during the Easter lunch, living Ebba behind, a one-year-old girl. Gosta is one of the cops who arrive on the island, but unfortunately, they won’t find what really happened with the family.
Years later, Ebba decides to move back to the island with her husband and turn the house in a B&B. After they are subjected to an attempt of arson, they begin to remove the floor boards in the living room where they will find dried blood underneath. And that’s how everything will start. Patrick and his colleagues investigate the case which will lead them to the unfinished case of the missing family. They will also start talking again with the boys who were on the island on that day and soon all the secrets will be revealed.
As usual, Erika is thrilled by the story and the investigation and decided to do an investigation by herself. In the end, Gosta will join her and both will get in troubles.
What about Anna? Well, this is the part that drove me crazy? I like her character but this time she was so annoying. She wouldn’t talk with her husband but, instead, she preferred to have an affair with someone she just met. Annoying, right?
Martin is still learning how to take care of a child, only by himself. There are problems in Paula’s paradise and Mellberg does nothing and gets all the credit.
This is one of Camilla’s best books. I like the story very much and I enjoyed reading every word, every sentence. How she alternate between the past and the present is what makes her unique, what makes her stand out from the crowd. And the story is well written, with many secrets that wait to be revealed.
And, the good news is that on 7th of April, this year, she will publish her tenth book, The Witch.
